A Note from the Founder Pooja
Every product, every founder, every company, has a story. The genesis of TKC was in a strategy class at Columbia University in the Summer of 2011, where I had just started my graduate studies. The task at hand was to come up with a business idea and execute upon it as if it were the real deal.
That sweltering June evening, upon desperately needing a study break, I incidentally took a shot at making homemade ice cream. Not just any ice cream-it was KULFI.
Hours later, once the ice cream had set, I had my first taste. It was a moment of sheer bliss, contentment, and restlessness. I couldn’t recall the last time I had even eaten kulfi, as it is a dessert that is mediocre when ordered off a menu, or then only available on special occasions. An entrepreneurial seizure had just occurred. I thought to myself: why can’t any day be a special occasion? Thus, TKC was born. So what is kulfi? It is… what apple pie is to Americans… what mochi is to the Japanese… what flan is to Mexicans…
It is and always will be a piece of Indian culture-a formidable masterpiece meant to be shared with the masses. To this day it is sold by street vendors in India to eager children and adults alike. Your first taste of kulfi isn’t something you forget or can quite describe-kind of like the feeling of white sand on your feet. I’m uncertain as to whether the man makes the experience, or the experience make the man. I do know that the experience is life itself. Kulfi is not just a dessert, it is an experience. It’s a reminder of the emotions and challenges that we go through in the span of just one day sometimes. It is the ultimate adult reward meant to be indulged and savored with all of your senses-that is the raison-oeutre of TKC..
I’m grateful to the people who made TKC possible-which by some alchemy has united suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers so that any class or creed of consumer can savor this titillating dessert..
I have personally never been one to rest on my laurels; I’ve always looked ahead to my next challenge. This particular one took time, creativity, and more patience than I ever thought I was capable of. I learned A LOT. Yes-more than anything a classroom or office combined could have taught me. I hope that you will follow me on this journey, and be inspired to take on your next challenge. When it’s time to reward yourself-there’s always kulfi!
